01/17/2009 - Kyu Exam at
JKA of Thibodaux and the Nichols State University Karate Club

JKA of Thibodaux and the Nichols State University Karate Club held a joint training session and kyu test with Mr. Mikami on Saturday, January 17 at the JKA-T dojo.  The clubs combine for these events every three to four months and alternate sites.  With Nichols State not yet back in session, the event had fewer students testing than usual.  The training session began with kihon and partner work.  The second half of the session was a review of the Heian kata, Tekki shodan and Bassai dai.  Training kata with Master Mikami was particularly helpful to this group as several participants are preparing for dan examination at our summer camp in May.  With the combined clubs, the ages of participants ranged from 8 to 60.  This group reflects that Shotokan is a martial art whose practice can be a lifelong activity.
